- This way, we will pay tribute to Luis León Sánchez, 2 times winner of the general classification and of one stage in 2020
This Monday, January 29th, the signing act of the agreement by which Mula will host the second Meta Volante of the Vuelta Ciclista a la Región de Murcia - Costa Cálida - Gran Premio Primafrio, which will be named after Luis León Sánchez, was held.
The town council has also signed on as sponsor of the Combativity Award and the Gobik Light Blue Jersey, which will also be named after Lusile. This jersey will be awarded to the cyclist who has played the most important role throughout the 199 kilometers of the race.
The event was attended by Juan Jesús Moreno, Mayor of Mula, Vicente López, Councillor for Sports in Mula, Esther Ballester, head of the Primafrio Foundation, Luis León Sánchez, cycling legend, and Paco Guzmán, General Director of the Vuelta Ciclista a la Región de Murcia.
Moreno praised the figure of Luis León Sánchez, and highlighted the great presence of the town in this year’s Vuelta: "I want to thank the race organisers for the work they do every year, and Luis León for being an ambassador for Mula all over the world. It is an honour that this jersey, which carries the colour of the flag of our town, is in the race and bears the name of an idol for all the young people of the Región. With this Meta Volante and this jersey we continue working for Mula to be a reference in sports".
With the Meta Volante - Luis León Sánchez we are going to pay tribute to the cyclist from Mula, who will have great prominence in this 44th edition. The winner of the race in 2018 and 2019 and a stage in 2020 has described as an honour to have a Meta Volante and a Trophy with his name.
"I would like to thank the organisers for thinking of me for this year's edition. For me, the Vuelta Ciclista a la Región de Murcia means a lot and I have been lucky enough to win it. It is incredible that a Trophy and, in this case, a jersey has my name on it. They have my full support".
Mula will thus play a major role in the 44th Vuelta Ciclista a la Región de Murcia - Costa Cálida - Gran Premio Primafrio. It will be a key point of the race, as it is located after the passage through Sierra Espuña and a few kilometres after finishing the descent of Collado Bermejo - Cima Marco Pantani, which will be through El Berro.
The race will arrive at 13:30, and will run through the main streets of the town. The entrance will be via Carretera de Pliego and there will be two crossings to the right. The first to enter Calle Juan Antonio Perea and the second to enter Gran Vía.
The Meta Volante – Luis León Sánchez will be located on Avenida Gran Via, at kilometre 128.5, with 70 kilometres to go.
A passing that will be special for José María García, a cyclist who grew up and took his first rides in Mula. Now, as a professional, he will be competing in his home race and hometown against the best teams and riders in the world.
The exit from the town will be via Avenida de La Paz. Mula will be left on the C-20 and C-2 towards Finca Romanones, Albudeite, Campos del Río, Alguazas and Molina de Segura.
